Identify what the Windows platform is doing today
A .NET/ASP to Shopify migration is not a server move. Classic ASP and ASP.NET stores are applications that may combine ecommerce pages with custom account logic, pricing rules, database queries, scheduled jobs and integrations. Before choosing a replacement, establish whether the store uses Classic ASP, ASP.NET Framework or a newer .NET application, and record which parts are standard retail functions and which are bespoke to the business.
Map the current hosting arrangement as well as the visible website. A Windows platform may rely on Internet Information Services, Windows Server, SQL Server, local file storage, SMTP services, scheduled tasks, third-party DLLs, Windows authentication or direct connections to business systems. Some of these responsibilities disappear on Shopify, while others need to be redesigned as apps, integrations or external services. Missing that distinction is how a simple platform proposal becomes a difficult migration late in the project.

Understand the difference between Windows hosting and Shopify
With a Windows-hosted ecommerce application, the retailer or its supplier is normally responsible for the operating system, web server, application runtime, security patches, certificates, backups, monitoring and deployment process. Even when a hosting company manages part of that work, someone still needs to understand how the application pool, database, file permissions and supporting services fit together. The store can run custom server code because the business controls the application environment.
Shopify is a hosted software platform. Shopify operates the core infrastructure, platform software, certificates, content delivery and checkout environment. The retailer manages its catalogue, content, theme, configuration, users and approved apps, but it does not receive access to a Windows server or deploy arbitrary ASP.NET code into Shopify. That reduces infrastructure work, but it also means custom behaviour must fit Shopify themes, platform features, apps, APIs, webhooks or an external service.
Translate the application instead of copying it
A migration should separate data, presentation and business rules. Products, variants, customers, addresses and orders may be transferable after mapping and cleaning. Page templates need to be rebuilt in Shopify rather than copied from ASP or Razor views. Content should be reviewed so headings, links, images and calls to action still work within the new theme and URL structure.
Custom .NET logic needs a decision for each feature. A standard Shopify capability may replace it. An app may provide a supported alternative. A small piece of external middleware may be appropriate where the logic genuinely remains unique. In some cases, the existing requirement should be simplified because years of custom work have preserved a process the business no longer needs. The goal is not to reproduce every line of code. It is to retain the useful business outcome in a supportable form.
Plan integrations and background work explicitly
Windows ecommerce applications often connect directly to SQL Server, an ERP, a warehouse database or a shared network location. Shopify does not provide direct access to its production database. Integrations use supported APIs, webhooks, feeds and app services. This changes how stock updates, price changes, order exports, customer records and fulfilment messages move between systems. Rate limits, retries, error reporting and ownership should be designed into the new flow.
Scheduled Windows tasks also need an alternative. Some work can be triggered by Shopify webhooks when an order or product changes. Timed jobs can run in an externally hosted service. If the business already has valuable .NET integration code, it may be possible to retain and adapt it as a separate service hosted on an appropriate cloud or managed platform. The important point is that this code will not run inside Shopify hosting, so its security, monitoring and support still need a named owner.
Treat domains, email and files as separate services
An older Windows host may also handle DNS, email forwarding, uploaded documents, image storage or automated messages. Moving the storefront does not automatically move those services. Record where the domain is registered, who controls DNS, how email is delivered and whether any applications rely on files stored on the web server. Plan each change separately so that launching the Shopify store does not interrupt unrelated business services.
Shopify manages the storefront certificate and serves public assets through its platform, but the business still needs access to domain records and any external email or integration services. Test transactional messages, contact forms, tracking, feeds and file links before changing DNS. Keep the old environment available for an agreed period where security and licensing permit, with access restricted, so the team can investigate missing records or behaviour after launch.
Decide whether Shopify is the right destination
Shopify can be a strong fit when a retailer wants to reduce responsibility for servers and platform updates, uses a recognisable ecommerce model and can operate within supported themes, apps and integrations. The hosted approach gives the business a clearer boundary: Shopify owns the core platform, while the retailer and its partners own configuration, content, data quality and connected services.
A heavily bespoke .NET store may not be a sensible Shopify candidate if its value depends on unusual pricing, account permissions, product configuration or operational workflows that cannot be simplified. Test those difficult cases during discovery rather than relying on a generic demo.
